TVER OBLAST TEENAGERS ATTACK AZERBAIJANI TRADERS. A group of 200
drunken ethnic Russian teenagers in Udomol (Tver Oblast) attacked the
trading booths of Azerbaijani merchants working in the city in the
early morning hours of 10 May. According to police, it was the first
case of interethnic violence in the city. The police arrested seven of
the teenagers, and five traders sought medical aid. Azerbaijanis,
Armenians, and Chechens initially came to the region in the 1970s to
construct the Kalinin Atomic Energy Station and then remained in the
area. Many of them opened their own stores and kiosks at the beginning
of perestroika. (Kommersant Daily, 12 May)
