LOCAL POLITICIAN VOTED OUT OF OFFICE

Hamburg / Germany (RNN Agency) April the 28th, 1999

Christian Democrat Wolfgang Bodenstedt has been lost his position as
head of the local CDU group in Fechenheim near Frankfurt/Main.
Bodenstedt hit the headlines last October when he said that a Roma
family whose home was firebombed were not entirely without blame in
the matter, leading to a reprimand from the local CDU head office and
a protest by the Roma Union outside the house. Bodenstedt now
threatens to form a breakaway fraction in protest against his
demotion.

ROMA MAN NOT DEPORTED TO SARAJEVO

Berlin / GERMANY (RNN Correspondent) April the 28th, 1999

A Roma man from Bosnia has been released from detention in Berlin
because he cannot be deported back to Bosnia: the airport in Sarajevo
is closed because of the Kosovo crisis. A previous court decision of
March 27th to release the man had gone unnoticed.

The town of Kehl/Rhine will open a halting site for Roma families in
the Summer of 1999

Kelh / GERMANY; Strasbourg / FRANCE (RNN Correspondent) April the
29th, 1999

The town of Kehl/Rhine will open a halting site for Roma families in
the Summer of 1999 after the town council unanimously agreed to the
project, which will cost in the region of 220,000 marks. This site
will provide families with the facilities necessary to stay for
several weeks. So far, intensive talks with the town's mayor and the
national train operator, Deutsche Bahn, have won site in Deutsche Bahn
property with room for upto 40 families and their caravans; costs will
be covered by the town. This temporary site is right on the border to
Strasbourg, something which will be of benefit to the mostly French
Roma families.

Preliminary talks with the mayor of Willstaett, about 10km from Kehl
on the A5 motorway near Offenburg, suggest that the local council will
be asked to approve a small halting site for Roma families.
Unfortunately without success were the further talks with the mayor of
the border town of Rheinau, Herr Oberle, and attempts to get the
Rheinau local council to demonstrate understanding for the problems
faced by Roma families: the council passed a motion providing 30,000
marks for the construction of concrete barricades which will prevent
Roma families from stopping there for even short periods of time. I
intend to get in touch with the state parliament of Baden-Wuerttemburg
as a result.

BOSNIAN CROATS FACE PROSECUTION

Hamburg / GERMANY (RNN Agency) April the 29th, 1999

Two men are to go before a war crimes tribunal in the Hague: Dario
Kordic and Mario Cerkec are charged with ethnic cleansing and other
acts of maltreatment against Muslims and Roma in central Bosnia
between 1991 and '94. If convicted they face life imprisonment.
According to the tribunal prosecutors, Kordic led Bosnian Croat forces
which expelled Muslims and Roma from areas under Croatian control in a
self-proclaimed autonomous area; both he and Cerkec bear
responsibility for atrocities carried out on the Muslim and Roma
civilians in this area, including destruction of houses,
incarceration, murder and rape.

"GERMANS & FOREIGNERS"

Cloppenburg / GERMANY (RNN Correspondent) April the 30th, 1999

An exhibition dedicated to migration to and from Germany over the
centuries has opened in the Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) town of
Cloppenburg. The intention behind the exhibition is to show how
Germany's culture is not solely the product of Germans but also of
ethnic groups ranging from medieval Roma to Huguenots expelled from
France to modern-day refugees.

Vienna / AUSTRIA (Romano Centro - Vienna) April the 30th, 1999

Answering quite some requests from refugees, who escaped from Kosovo
and Serbia to Hungary we are very unhappy to inform you: Refugees from
Kosovo (only!) can get the permission to stay in Austria until
December 99' only if they have close relatives in Austria (parents,
children, brothers and sisters, grandparents or grandchildren) who are
legally in the country. They have to furnish the refugees with a
"Verpflichtungserklrung" (financial commitment signed in front of a
notary) and the refugees will get no financial support and are not
accepted at all if they already stayed in Hungary (safe third country)
for more than very few days.

The only other possibility for refugees from Kosovo and Serbia to
cross the border from Hungary into a Schengen Austria are tourist
visa. For this one needs: An invitation of someone who stays legally
in Austria, again a "Verpflichtungerklrung" (financial commitment
signed in front of a notary), a proof that the appartment of the
inviting person is big enough and his salary permits an invitation,
and a health insurance for the invited person.

In a word: Besides the ones Austria selects in Macedonia, refugees are
not welcome. The embassies are not obliged to issue tourist visa, at
the moment they accept only invitations from relatives, practically
the
Schengen borders are closed.
