CONF./CFP- Uyghurs in the Twenty-First Century

ONE-DAY CONFERENCE: "UYGHURS in TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY"

A conference titled the "Uyghurs in Twenty-first Century" will be held
on May 26, 2001, in Washington, DC.  The purpose of the conference is
to provide a forum for discussing issues and problems which will have
great impact on the future of Uyghurs.  A variety of topics related to
the current situation and future of Uyghurs can be presented.

A general list of suggested topics:

- China's "Western Development Plan"
- The Gas Pipeline
- Social issues in today's Uyghur society
- Challenge for the exiled Uyghur community
- Central Asian Uyghurs: Their role
- Internet and Uyghurs
- Human Rights
- Religion
- Education

We are seeking papers from western scholars, Uyghurs, graduate or
undergraduate students and others.  This conference will be restricted
to scientific studies only, therefore, all the presentations need to
be approached scientifically.  (For people who are interested in
activism aspect, we can arrange a different gathering on the next day,
May 27.)

Speakers may present whatever they find or think, even things you
think we may not like to hear.  Each speaker will be given no more
than 30 minutes including question times.

This is a good opportunity to take a good look at Uyghurs and share
what you see, and find out what others see.

If you like to present a paper, please send your abstract no later
than May 17.  If you just want to attend, please let us know by
sending an e-mail or calling us.

Unfortunately, we are not able to cover the travel expenses of the
presenters and participants, but, we will cover the conference fee.

We welcome participants from all communities.

A preliminary program for the conference is included below.
The conference is organized and sponsored by Uyghur American
Association.
