2. GEORGIA TO GET ITS BELONGINGS

Russian frontier troops will be gradually withdrawn from the Adjarian
sector of the Georgian-Turkish border beginning this summer. Aslan
Abashidze, the Adjarian leader, discussed the prospects of the
withdrawal with the Russian Command and asked them to cede all their
property to Georgia.

4. ON BEHALF OF BIG POLITICS

While the Kurd community of Georgia was preparing to celebrate Novruz
(folk holiday) in the Tbilisi Concert Hall on March 23, the police
searched the Tbilisi office of the Cultural-Information Centre of
Kurdistan and the flats of some of its activists at daybreak March 20.
As a result, 13 Kurds were arrested. After questioning, seven of them
were released and six extradited to Turkey as "having violated the
passport regime". Georgian MP Mame Raik, an ethnic Kurd, considers
that the arrested Kurds were deported in breach of the Geneva
Convention on political asylum.

1. A FEMALE HOSTAGE RELEASED

According to the mayor of Poti, the Abkhaz authorities have released
Nato Kvirkvelia, one of the 11 crew of the Georgian fishing ship
"Alioni" which was arrested in Abkhazia not long ago. Tbilisi and
Sukhumi continue negotiations on the release of the others.

1. THE GEORGIAN-OSSETIAN NEGOTIATIONS HAVE NO PROSPECTS AT THIS STAGE

Irakli Matchavariani, the President's representative in conflict
settlement, claims that the Georgian-Ossetian
negotiations have no prospects at this stage because, due to the
coming parliamentary elections in South Ossetia, a declaration of
independence from Georgia seems likely to become a main trump-card of
local political parties during their pre-election campaign.

3. AGGRESSION IS CREEPING TO US VIA THE ABKHAZ RAILROAD

On April 15 Eduard Shevardnadze met Nikolay Aksenenko, the Russian
minister for railway transport, who suggested to start exploitation of
the Abkhaz railroad till the Poti seaport. According to the newspaper,
if the proposal were implemented the Georgian economy would lose.
First, it would exacerbate the struggle for privatisation of the Poti
seaport. Second, smuggling would increase in the Gali district of
Abkhazia. Finally, the Georgian market would be overwhelmed by cheap
Russian products competing with domestic production. So it
would be good for Russia and Abkhazia, not for Georgia.
