New book on Crimean Tatars


MINELRES subscribers with an interest in the situation of the Crimean
Tatars should note the publication of a collection of articles, edited by
Edward A. Allworth, entitled _The Tatars of Crimea: Return to the
Homeland: Studies and Documents_, Second Edition, Revised and
Expanded (Durham: Duke University Press, 1998). The earlier version
of this book, published in 1988, was entitled _Tatars of the Crimea:
Their Struggle for Survival_.

The second edition consists of 16 chapters broken down into three
sections:

"Forming a Modern Identity"

"The Ordeal of Forced Exile"

"Returning to Crimea"

The last section is probably of the greatest interest to MINELRES
readers, and it consists of the following chapters:

Edward A. Allworth, "The Elusive Homeland"

Andrew Wilson, "Politics in and around Crimea: A Difficult Homecoming"

Nermin Eren, "Crimean Tatar Communities Abroad"

"Documents about Returning to Crimea"

This volume (which is available in both paperback as well as cloth
editions) also includes a bibliography of recent publications in English
about Crimea.  I strongly recommend this volume to those who would
like to gain a good overview of the past and current situations of the
Crimean Tatars.
