Tolerance, Respect and Human Rights 2001 seminar
May 17-21, Prague, Czech Republic
The international initiative Teachers for Tolerance is now searching
for keynote speakers and workshop leaders for a seminar to be held on
May 17-21, 2001 in Prague, Czech Republic.
The seminar is targeted at teachers, teacher assistants, teacher
trainers, NGO educators, academics and other people from Central and
Eastern Europe and South Africa who are interested in education.
Special focus will be placed on recruiting participants from
marginalized and/or discriminated communities, such as Roma teacher
assistants in Central Europe, black female teachers from Africa or
educators from immigrant communities.
The keynote speakers should provide theoretical background to the
seminar themes, as outlined bellow. Workshop leaders should prepare
and run interactive activities, also related to the seminar topic.
The seminar themes:
Prejudice and racism. Forms and levels of discrimination in society.
European antidiscrimination policies; impact of the EU �Race Equality�
directive.
Human rights and minorities. International and local legislation.
Discrepancy between laws and their implementation.
Issues of growing inequalities in the globalized world.
Multicultural and antiracist education. Contents, methods, and
didactics.
Education of Romani children and other children from marginalized and
excluded communities.
Managing multiethnic communities on local level. Role of school,
creating partnerships.
Time allocation:
Keynote presentations should not be longer then 30 minutes as their
papers will be available to all participants in advance. After each
presentation there will be 10 minutes allocated for discussant�s
comments and 30 minutes for general discussion
Workshops can be either one and half hour long (preferred) or three
hours long. Exceptionally, the workshop may take all day.
The working languages of the seminar will be Czech and English,
eventually also Romanes.
If you are interested please send your paper abstract or workshop
proposal (not longer than 10 lines) by February 20, 2001. The
conference programme committee meeting will evaluate the proposals by
February 28, 2001.
Note: Due to a very limited budget we cannot cover any international
travel costs, however we hope that we will manage to obtain funds to
cover accommodation and meals for the keynote speakers and workshop
leaders from Eastern Europe.
Please, forward this notice to anybody who, according to your view,
could be a good keynote speaker or workshop facilitator at our
conference.
