Attitude to Azeris in Russia improved

(Translated from Russian by MINELRES)

ATTITUDE TOWARDS AZERIS IN MOSCOW HAS CHANGED

Baku. 6 February 2001 ("Ekho")

On 5 February, a meeting of the political council of the "Yurddash"
party was held. At the meeting, Azer Guliev who returned from a trip
to Moscow spoke to the leaders of this political organization. He told
about his visits to the Ministry of Interior and the Prosecutors
Office of the Russian Federation, as well as about [his] meetings with
compatriots. During last years, as a result of discriminatory attitude
towards our compatriots in Russia, several hundreds people died.
Attitude towards our fellow countrymen has somewhat changed only after
the visit of [the Russian president] Putin to Baku. Probably, a
special word of command was issued in this respect. Anyway, they are
not stopped on streets without any reason anymore, and pogroms of
their trading sites by law enforcement bodies discontinued. They are
impatiently awating when a treaty on the status of Azeris in Russia
will be signed - it can become [a tool of] their legal protection.
Then, a draft law on labour migration under preparation by the party
was discussed. [The draft] will be submitted to the National Assembly
"Yurddash" chairman Mais Safarli, who is a deputy himself. As long as
the law on the right of people to go for lengthy work [abroad] is nor
adopted, it is impossible to conclude also inter-state agreements
about simplified visa regime for their stay abroad.
