Guram Sharadze Claims the Problem of Muslim Meskhetians to Be Political
Juggling

Just those who want to break stability in Georgia proposed to repatriate
Muslim Meskhetians (residents of the southern Georgian deported in 1944),
Guram Sharadze, the chairman of the parliamentary migration committee, said
at his press-conference on January 9. Georgia, in his words, cannot be
responsible for the former Communist government's faults. Most of the MPs
share his position, the newspaper reports, claiming Georgia to be yet
unready for such a repatriation. "Resonance" No. 5, January 10, p. 2

Muslim Meskhetians May Prove Subversive of Georgia

Muslim Meskhetians were allowed to settle in northern provinces of Turkey,
Mamuka Areshidze, the head of the parliamentary group for relations with
Caucasian nations, said at his recent press-conference. The Turkish
government, in his words, may use them to carry out its pan-Islamic ideas in
the Caucasus and reduce Russian influence in the region. "Shvidi Dge" No. 4,
January 12-13, pp. 1, 3

Muslim Meskhetians Blocking the Way to the Council of Europe

The problem of Muslim Meskhetians (residents of the southern Georgian
deported in 1944), Russia's "last trump card" against Georgia, may turn out
the main hurdle on the way to Georgia's membership in the Council of Europe,
the newspaper argues. More important still, interests of the two
historically rival powers, Russia and Turkey, in this issue coincide: both
may use the Meskhetians, if repatriated, to threaten stability in Georgia.
