WELCOME TO IWPR'S CAUCASUS REPORTING SERVICE, NO. 14, January 14,
2000.
 
THE CHECHENS' SURPRISE. The Russians are forced to fight hard over
lost ground as Chechen rebels attempt to relieve the pressure on
Grozny. Ruslan Isaev, in Nazran, Ingushetia, reports.
 
EDGY SOLDIERS, VILLAGERS IN FEAR. With morale sagging, Russian
generals have begun to turn on the local populations: now almost every
Chechen male is a potential guerrilla, while Ingush villages are being
fired on. Erik Batuyev, in Dattykh, Ingushetia, and Nabi Abdullaev, in
Gerzel, Chechnya, report.
 
THE RUSSIAN MEDIA TURNS. Russian media are rapidly souring on the
Chechen campaign, while the government retains tight controls on
information leaking out of the embattled republic. Lev Lurie in St.
Petersburg reports.
 
GUN-RUNNING IN GEORGIA. The discovery of a truck smuggling arms from
Georgia into Chechnya triggers a war of words between Tbilisi and
Moscow. Sozar Subeliani in Tbilisi reports.
 
ALMATY SHUNS CHECHEN REFUGEES. Despite traditionally pro-Chechen
sympathies, Kazakhstan has succumbed to unrelenting Russian
propaganda, giving Chechen refugees an icy reception. Amanchi Gunashev
in Almaty reports.
